This is Sophia Orr and she is a conscientious objector from Israel.
She spent 85 days in a military prison for refusing to serve in the army right after the largest attack (in terms of casualties) in the entire history of Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
In Israel, women must serve in the army on equal terms with men. For men, military service is 30 months and 24 months for women.
There are only two reasons why men and women may not serve in the Israeli army - medical contraindications (including psychological problems) or if they are Haredi (ultra-Orthodox Jews).
But what if you have beliefs that conflict with your obligation to serve in the military? For example, if you are a pacifist. Or for example, you just want to have a choice - to serve or not.
Sophia and her like-minded friends are fighting to ensure that they and future generations will have this choice one day.
I was lucky enough to photograph the moment Sofia embraced her parents and her brothers-in-arms before her first prison arrest (there were three such arrests for her) at the entrance to an Israeli military prison.
